LOWBALL
Street Date: June 03, 2003
Lowball is a film that Bruce was an exectutive Producer on. It's now been released by mtivideo and should be on your local video shelf as well as available to order. VERY COOL! I will be getting a copy shortly! When John (Peter Greene) and his rookie partner, Eddie (Erik “Everlast” Shrody), are suspended from the police force for a series of subordinate activities, they find themselves in even deeper trouble, when John’s sister, Paula (Amber Smith) is kidnapped by a vengeful madman. No longer bound by the protocol of the police force, John and Eddie go on a frantic search to find Paula. In over his head and his sister’s life on the line, John must confront his demons or lose everything. This is the first time that I have the pleasure in commenting on a film of which Bruce has been a producer rather than "the star". I have been extremely curious about this film for many years. I am thoroughly tickled to have been able to catch a glimpse of this film. There is an extra spouting of glee as everyone else has the opportunity to watch this film since it's re-release in June of 2003! Lowball is definitely not a 'high gloss' film. It gets down to the nitty gritty of drugs; cops having gone too deep into their undercover characters; unconditional "buddy" love; and a good old American avenging of the NY mobster bad dude, by the name of Bruce. Hmmmm... was there a coincidence in the naming of the bad apple in Lowball? I think not! :*) Casting Peter Greene was a good move as he did a wonderful job with his character of John. I enjoyed some of the lines within the Lowball script. I did chuckle now and again, however this is not a comedy. I liked how Lowball was filmed as well as lit as it added to the grittiness of the story. Like with all Independent films, one has to work with what they have at hand and I think the Lowball team did what they envisioned. I did have one issue with the women being too perfect but come on, Bob Guccione was a producer in the film as well. Need I say more. I rather much enjoyed the "Caligula" reference within the film. Helen Mirren and Malcolm McDowell were in that film. I have a story to tell about Caligula.... maybe one day. Anyhow, I was very humoured by the reference. FANTASTIC MUSIC in the film! I noticed an address at the end of the credits where someone could order the soundtrack but I am not sure if it is still a valid address. It would be worth getting, in my opinion. Overall I DO think Bruce picked an interesting story with interesting characters to invest in. This is definitely a "boyz" film but for you gals who like the "man films" please watch it. One Man's Justice and Kounterfeit were shot around this time so I can see the appeal of those films. Especially One Man's Justice. KUDOS TO THE MAN we call Bruce! BTW to the imdb "review guy" or I should say filmmaker wannabe as he has posted 31 criticisms... he forgot to keep an open mind. POV! |
