Diving Vacation - Fanfic

By Silver D April 2001

Finally... I heaved a deep sigh as I stepped off the plane in Honolulu. It had been so long since I'd been on a vacation. For a moment, I simply stood, letting the sun's heat burn down on me, so different from the cold weather of the past three months.

I hurried through customs, hoping to get to the car rental before the rest of the tourists, all proudly flashing lurid shirts. I still haven't figured out why anyone would want to advertise being a tourist in such a dramatic fashion.

I was lucky and actually managed to nab a small black convertible. I dropped my things at a quiet hotel on the other side of the island and then wandered down to the docks to check in with the diving instructor and check out the equipment.

Since I had to get the jetlag out of my system before the instructor would let me anywhere near the diving equipment, I turned in early, surprisingly quickly falling into a dreamless sleep.

The next morning the instructor was very apologetic, some tourists had unexpectedly turned up and he needed to supervise them, but he had found a diving partner who would go down with me. As the other diver had not turned up yet, I gathered my gear, checking everything, then suiting up. I was in the water, adjusting the weights, so did not realize my diving partner had arrived until somebody splashed in beside me. All I could see was that it was a man, because he had already suited up and was fixing his weight belt too. Hanging onto the ladder beside the dock I waited for him to finish, so I could find out who I was going to be diving with. When he finally looked up, all I could think was "I've seen those eyes somewhere". It's not like bright blue eyes are that rare, and I could not see anything else behind the face mask, but still...

For a moment I was speechless. Those eyes gleamed, as if he knew exactly what I was thinking, but all he said was "shall we?!" and then flipped down. Not having much choice, I followed suit. It was the most fun I had ever had while diving, even though I did not know who I was with. He made me laugh with his antics, scaring the fish and twice me too by popping up unexpectedly from behind corals. As anybody who has been diving knows, laughing is not the best idea when underwater and breathing through a tube!

We were back at the dock three times during the day, to switch tanks and grab lunch, but each time he managed to disappear before I saw who it was and did not return until I was back in the water. It was already dark when we clambered up on the dock, unsuited and stowed our gear, so all I could see was lithe shadow moving among other shadows.

For the first time since that morning, he spoke again, revealing a slight British accent, asking whether I would care to go diving again the next day. I said I would like to, but as I had been warned against talking to strangers, what his name was. With an undercurrent of amusement "I know a great way to deal with that...". The next thing I knew, a pair of strong arms had drawn me close and I was being kissed quite thoroughly. After the initial surprise, I responded, not as if I had a choice, whoever he was, the man was a great kisser!

Then he stepped back, and, still with laughter running in his voice "Adam Garou, at your service". I had to laugh, "being secretive?! still, with a werewolf at my side I won't need to worry about sharks... Well then, I will be Lilith for the time. Please to make your acquaintance, Adam!". An answering flash of teeth in the dark "likewise, fair lady, do I need to fear for my neck, then?!". After kidding back and forth for a bit, we saw the lights of the hotel through the trees. I turned, hoping to see who I had such fun with, but he was already gone, melting into the shadows between the trees. Just a laughing "I'll see you tomorrow", then he was gone.

At breakfast the next morning, the waiter came over with a bright red hibiscus and a note. "I'm sorry, lovely siren, I was called away. Maybe, as creatures of the night, our paths will cross again. Adam G."

At the end of the vacation, I found out from the diving instructor with whom I had spent such a fun day with. Maybe, just maybe, we will meet again...
