  DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS

Here is what the DND site mentions about Bruce's character and career:

Damodar

Damodar is one of the few non-mages in the empire to rise to a position of great influence. As the commander of the Crimson Guard, Izmer's standing elite defense force, he ruthlessly upholds the law and the empire's social order. Those who would break the law or dare to challenge the mages' rule fear Damodar's justice. Some may question how a crude warrior with no discernable magical talent has risen to such heights of power, but no one can question his loyalty to the mages or his fanatical dedication to his duties. Many think he enjoys such things as prisoner interrogation a bit too much· but a man in such a stressful position as he holds should be allowed a few small indulgences from time to time.

Bruce Payne

Bruce Payne studied at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London where he graduated with seven awards. His film, television, and theater credits are numerous. His filmography includes Passenger 57, Highlander: End Game, Switch, Warlock: The End of Innocence, Absolute Beginners and many more. Among his most notable television guest appearances are leading roles in La Femme Nikita, Tales from the Crypt and The Equalizer. In the theater, Payne has starred in a number of productions including West and Greek, both directed by Steven Berkoff; Alice, directed by Nicholas Hytner, as well as starring in The Rocky Horror Picture Show as 'Dr. Frank-N-Furter.'

Mmmmm. ..Leather!Bruce Payne - Damodar, Human Fighter, Profion's Henchman

Damodar is the handsome but sadistic commander of Profion's Crimson Guard. Better than your average Henchman, He's a thorn in the side of the party till the end of the film.

Damodar, Commander of the Crimson Guard Once a stunningly handsome and charismatic man, Damodar's encounter with the black dragon whose hide he now wears left him permanently scarred. Finding himself feared and reviled by those who once admired him..he has become increasingly cold and cruel. Now, instead of admiration.. he has to make do with inspiring fear. He can still be charming when he needs to be, but in truth his mask of civility hides a sadistic and ruthless nature. A fierce warrior, He commands the Crimson Guard, a security force loyal to the Council of Mages. Under his command however they have become a deathsquad, loyal only to him. Damodar truly enjoys the terror his name inspires among the citizens of Izmer. He has allied himself with Profion because he has seen the writing on the wall and desires to aid Profion in his attempt to usurp the throne. ..And if Profion should be the victim of some "unfortunate" accident after he has made Damodar the general of Izmer's Armies? So much the better.

A Handsome Devil...

No stranger to horror or scifi fans, he has really begun to carve a niche for himself in the fantasy genre. This year he will also star as Kell, an evil immortal in the upcoming Highlander 4:Endgame. Bruce's legendary swordfighting skill was only one of many reasons director Corey Solomon felt he would be perfect for the role of Damodar. He possesses the uncanny ability to be both very charming and very creepy.. definitely a unique combination! Payne was born in London. He grew up in Kilburn, North London. At the age of 16 Bruce had a two-year ordeal with Spina- Bifida. Surgery saved his spine but kept him on his back for more than a year. He ended up being behind in his studies and that experience instilled in him a hunger for knowledge. His passion for performing began early when he would regularly sneak or bluff his way onto the film lots of Shepperton Studios. With little actual acting experience, he was accepted into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts where he spent 3 years learning to hone his acting craft. There he appeared both on stage and in critically acclaimed television productions, including a starring role in the BBC's biography of "Oscar Wilde," as well as "Smart Money," "The Bell Run," "Miss Marple" and others. After "Privates on Parade," he had roles in the 1984 release "Oxford Blues," in "Nemesis" (with Joan Hickson as Miss Marple), in Mel Brooks' madcap comedy "Solarbabies," and in Julien Temple's stylish film "Absolute Beginners," all released in 1986. Bruce first came to the public's attention as the violent, silk-smooth terrorist pitted against airline security expert Wesley Snipes in Warner Bros.' 1992 action thriller "Passenger 57." Although that role marked an important upturn in Payne's career and celebrity, it was simply another, albeit significant, motion picture credit for Bruce. Payne also starred in the HBO feature "Full Eclipse," and the Sci-Fi Channel Original movie "Ravager" and recently has had a recurring role as Jurgen, a special operative with a unique relationship to Section One on the hit USA Network show, "La Femme Nikita" .

Big films/awards: Sweepers(1999) Title role in Warlock III(1999) and of course, Passenger 57(1992)

Our Take: Bruce is a better actor than what his film credits suggest, and unlike Darth Maul you will get to see a lot of him. This could be a big role for him.

Genre: Fantasy/Action/Adventure. Studio: Unknown. Production Company: Sweetpea Entertainment. Project Phase: Greenlighted. Who's In It: Jeremy Irons (Profion); Zoe McLellan; Justin Whalin; Marlon Wayans; Lee Arenberg; Kristen Wilson; Robert Miano; Bruce Payne (Damodar). Who's Making It: Courtney Solomon (Director, Producer); Topper Lillian, Carole Cartwright, Mark Leahy (Screenwriters); Kia Jam (Producer); Joel Silver (Executive Producer); Douglas Milsome (Director of Photography); Caroline Ross (Editor); Barbara Lane (Costume Designer); George Gibbs (Special Effects Supervisor); Station X Studios (Special Digital Visual Effects). Premise: Based on the role-playing game of the same name, expect a diversity of characters banding together to fight evil forces, including dragons. There ought to be a good deal of violent action and a touch of that old black magic. Picture Romania, or some comparable medeval setting. Wanna play? Release Date: Rumored October 2000. Comments: With TSR Inc. being bought up by Wizards of the Coast, there may well be a (long) delay with this project getting off the ground. Rumors: None. Scoop Feedback: [Draft role-played by 'Ace'.] April 29, 1997... Premiere magazine mentioned a storyline a couple years back dealing with a rogue character and a magical item that can control dragons. Stan Winston was listed as second unit director as well as having created about 14 or so monster costumes concerning creatures 'native' to the D&D game world. As all other sci-fi films claim, the final scene in the film would contain unprecedented special effects concerning a 'dog fight' of many dragons. [Scoop from 'Atomic Boy'.] June 28, 1997... The script has been finalized and it is now in pre-production. Shooting looks to begin in the next couple months. Originally planned as a TV show with Silver Pictures, project was put on hold due to TSR buyout buy Wizards of the Coast. Budget for film is still undetermined, and no casting has been done yet. [anon.] August 10, 1997... Courtney Solomon and Kia Jam will be producing, with Courtney possibly directing, and screenwriter Mark Leahy has done a rewrite. One possible location being considered for filming is Romania. Storyboards have been comissioned and are underway. Discussions with Digital Domain are happening right now. Most studios are currently reviewing the project, so distribution is not sure, but it's hoped principle photography will start by the end of November '97. April 29, 1997... Looks like Joel Silver will be on board as an executive producer. [Offered by... anonymous.] November 10, 1997... Speculation ahead. First of all, although a Dungeons and Dragons movie is mentioned , there is no mention of a Dragonlance movie. This could mean one of two things. Either the Dragonlance movie is stalled, or dead in the water OR the Dragonlance movie and the Dungeons and Dragons movie are one and the same. [Deduction courtesy of 'spirit'.] November 22, 1997... "Many people were certain that the TSR buyout (they were purchased by Wizards of the Coast, makers of Magic: The Gathering) would kill the chances for any movies from TSR properties. I did some digging and found out that TSR still retained all auxiliary rights to its material, including film and book rights. TSR also bought back its independence not too long ago. HOWEVER... this has also meant that any and all movie projects are back in limbo, at least for now." [Keep on digging Gline.] We asked around and learned that 'Gline' was partially in error. Our sources told us TSR hasn't had ANY of the film rights since around 1994 or '95, thereabouts. As for TSR, all the contracts TSR had with others were held up when WotC bought them. December 26, 1997... We confirmed that Universal has indeed signed to handle all foreign distribution earlier this year, while domestic is still being shopped. Bids are still being taken for the CGI work. Some test footage shooting has taken place in LA, but the bulk of shooting will be done overseas in Feburary. (again, nope.) February 9, 1998... Sweet Pea Entertainment has finally announced that they have started work on the Dungeons & Dragons movie, due late next year. The deal for the Dragonlance movie fell through. [Thanks to 'jeremyh', 'spirit', 'rohobbs', and 'marym'.] June 21, 1998... Some info about the old stages of the project as well as some info on the latest stage was sent to us. A few years back we heard some pro names rumored to be in some form of consideration with the project. Stan Winston was being considered as director for the film at one point, we know that. We've also heard of Francis Ford Coppola serving as (possibly) an executive producer, and then later James Cameron was mentioned as somehow connected to the project. Nevertheless, Paramount Pictures and Lightstorm Entertainment couldn't reach an agreement on the financing side of things, and nothing more was heard about Winston, Coppola or Cameron. Had Paramount reached the agreement we may have never seen Titanic last Christmas. We were also told that the Dragons in the movie will be creatures sought out by the good guys to help win a war. [Submitted by Russell Hutton.] A different scooper sent us this synopsis of the film's storyline: "The plotline (which is set in the 1980's for some reason) follows five teenage friends in a small town in Ohio who are transported to the world of Dungeons and Dragons via a 'magical twenty-sided dice' which one of the boys buys from an old man at a D&D convention (the old man later appears as a wizard in the film.) Once in this new 'Realm' they find that they've 'become' their D&D characters (complete with swords and spells) and begin a quest to get back home, during which they meet several strange CGI creatures, descend into a Dungeon, accidentally waste several 'wishes' from a magical ring, and do battle with a computer generated Red Dragon. Once they defeat the Dragon (big surprise) they decide to STAY and continue to have adventures, instead of going back to Ohio and slaving away in college. This leaves it wide open for a ton of sequels and creates a (much hoped for) franchise." [Sent in by 'Bevardos'.] The same scooper also gave us their take on the long production path this baby's been on: "Sweet Pea Entertainment, producers of Walt Disney Pictures' comic-book based feature, GEN 13, has acquired all rights to the popular role-playing game 'Dungeons and Dragons'. The company is now developing the property into a feature film in collaboration with Grand Design Entertainment. This project hopes to take advantage of the virtually untapped literary market of role-playing game fans, for which there is an established audience of over 12 million players worldwide. "Even before the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon was in production (1983) there was tremendous interest from Hollywood in producing a movie based on Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. Gary Gygax, the creator of D&D, was active in working with various agents and would-be producers and studios with an aim towards making a movie deal actuality. "A script from James Goldman (The Lion in Winter, White Nights) was acquired by TSR, Inc. (owners of Dungeons and Dragons). Several studios were interested. Mr. Gygax did all he could to get a major theatrical motion picture into production. Sid Shineberg, then president of Universal expressed his interest in acquiring the D&D film rights, but due to complications at TSR, no contract was ever signed." ['Bevardos'.] June 25, 1998... Thanks to one of our former scoopers for helping us clear up some bad D&D information and our own false assumptions. Contrary to what we believed, some principal photography did take place for a week at the end of August '97. The footage was editing and also scored. [Scoop scribbed on one side of a d20 by Russell Hutton.] Lots of you seem to be more in-the-know than ourselves concerning this production. Multiple scoopers wrote to us that 'Bevardos' scoop (alleging that the storyline followed 5 teenagers from Ohio transported to the world of D&D) is utterly incorrect. Come to think of it, 'Bevardos' plotline sounds more and more like the one used on the Saturday morning cartoon series as well as a series of books entitled Guardians of the Flame by author Joel Rosenberg. "'Guardians of the Flame' follows a group of college students who get sent to the D&D world," scooper 'Dredd' said in their follow-up to 'Bevardos' post. "Their college professor (who acts as their DM for their weekly gaming session) wants them to defeat a dragon and open the gateway between that world (where he originally came from and was a wizard of great fame and power) and our world. At the end, after defeating the dragon, they are faced with a choice between going back to normal boring lives and staying there where they can be somebody (e.g. the crippled kid can be a strong dwarf, the engineer can actually build 'great' things instead of just trying to compete for glory, etc.), they choose to stay in the gaming world." [Thanks to Bryce, 'Dredd', Russell Hutton, 'Myrth', and anonymous for firing off their magic missiles at our domain.] June 28, 1998... During an online chat, actor Justin Whalin (who portrayed Jimmy Olsen from ABC's Lois & Clark series) stated that he has signed as one of the leads in the D&D movie. ['Renfield64' hands us the scoop on a rat-stick.] January 23, 1999... We haven't heard much about this film for a while now but one lone scooper rang our phone to discuss what they've heard is happening with the D&D film. According to our scooper filming is slated to commence in Prague next month, on February 15th. We've been told that CGI work on "most" of the dragon effects has been already done. Our scooper also elaborated that "the item which controls the dragons (a rod or scepter of some type) has yet to be made but fantasy sculptor Lisa Snellings is being considered for the design and manufacture of it." [Scooped by anonymous.] February 24, 1999... In early February the trades reported that this production is all set to start principal photography shortly. The $27 million dollar film has hired special visual effects house Station X Studios to provide the film's many digital effects and creatures. Rumor has it there is a fight sequence near the end where numerous dragons battle each other. So far there's been no word on casting or what is the film's storyline. April 20, 1999... Straight from our scooper's monitor screen into yours: "Currently casting in London. From what I've read of the script the storyline seems to follow and Empress and a band of vagabond helpers in a quest to end injustice and inequality. And a 'magic rod' seems to feature quite prominently." [Courtesy of Jack Danger.] April 21, 1999... Alright, now this is more like it! Our scooper returned with the Web's first ever mention of the names and races for the film's main characters: The Empress - this seems to be the part of the young noble who wants to rid the land of injustice, inequality. Damodar - a mage and the film's bad guy. Marina - a low level mage in the main party of adventurers. Dexter - Marina's minature Dragon who's her pet/companion. Ridley- a common thief and all-around good guy in the party. Marina has romantic feelings for him. Elwood - an ultra gnarly dwarf who joins up with the group of heroes during their quest. [A repeat scoop by 'Jack Danger'.] May 4, 1999... Our scooper reports overhearing that a practical visual effects company at Pinewood is due to start work on the production in the summer. The information our scooper received from them was that the cost of the film was £9.4m (around $20 million US). [Scooped by 'Fat Rich'.] May 8, 1999... The Internet Movie Database now reports that actress Thora Birch (of Patriot Games and Alaska) has been cast as the Emperess. [Reported by Dustin Putman.] May 16, 1999... The film starts shooting in Prague on May 28th and the current budget has now risen to $35 million US. The director of photography is Douglas Milsome, who's last job was on Eyes Wide Shut. ['Misterdo' rolled a d20.] The group financing the production is Helkon Enterprises, a giant German producing/distributing company. Kelkon just financed Heavy Metal 2, which just wrapped up production, and earlier ponied up for the forgettable Legionnaire starring Jean Claude Van Damme. [Scooped by 'Bond'.] June 2, 1999... Station X Studios, the company developing and designing the digital effects for this picture, is looking for a few good mouse hands. The company just posted a recruitment on the alt.movies.visual-effects newsgroup for compositors, modellers, and animators to work on the Dungeons and Dragons.... Station X Studios is currently seeking staff and project hires for immediate openings on the feature film Dungeons & Dragons. We are looking for experienced artists in the following categories: Entry level and Advanced Modelers - must possess proficiency and speed in the use of Lightwave Modeler. Organic modeling skills are a plus. Animators - character animators with a good sense of timing, weight and movement. All animation platforms considered. We will train on our in-house character animation program. Compositors - Experience with flowchart compositors and feature film production history preferred. If you have what it takes to advance the art and science of digital moviemaking, send your reel and resumes to: Station X Studios Attn: Recruiting 1717 Stewart St Santa Monica, CA 90404 Fax 310-828-4101 or email recruiting@stationxstudios.com [Thanks to our amigo 'Yevlar' for doing a good job.] June 15, 1999... In addition to scoring Jeremy Irons to play the film's bad guy, there's been talk that the movie has a early forecasted release date of October 2000. Filming is currently taking place in Prague. ['Bath' Matt Dive and 'pwyatt' helped us out.] The Rocky Radio web site recently conducted an interview with Rocky Horror Show cast member Richard O'Brien. O'Brien revealed in the interview he has just finished completing script rewriting on the film in the Czech Republic. The scooper sent us this excerpt from the interview: "For instance, the hero says to my character 'but I thought we had a deal. What happened to honor amongst thieves?' My character is supposed to say 'honor is for fools, my friend.' Well, that's very... cliched swords-and-sworcery kind of dialog, isn't it? So I changed that 'round to where he says 'what about honor among thieves' and I say 'oh, what a romantic notion.'" [Scooped by Mike.] July 17, 1999... This picture on the right appeared in the tabloid Blesk (translation: Lightning), one of the largest-circulation papers in the Czech Republic. The translation of the photo's caption appears below: "RABI - Actor Bruce Payne is at Rabi Castle in the process of the filming of a scene from the American fairy tale with the working title of Dungeons and Dragons. The fairy tale film, which is going to feature special digital effects and camera tricks is being filmed in the Czech Republic. In addition to Rabi Castle other locations will be Lipnice nad Sazavou, the library at Strahov monastery, Kacina Castle, St Mikulas Cathedral in Prague as well as the monastery in Doksanech. One of the main parts in the film is played by English actor, Jeremy Irons." [A great scoop sent across the ocean by 'Sweeney Todd'. Here, have a mysterious orange potion we found on our last dungeon crawl.] August 3, 1999... So what's the real name of Jeremy Irons' character in the D&D movie? Earlier reports said it was 'Damodar', but thanks to a recent Army Archerd column in The Hollywood Reporter, it might be something else. Archerd reported that Irons' character's name was 'Profion' in his column, and mentioned of a scene featuring Irons surrounded by "thousands of skeletons of plague victims." Creeeepy. "What's notable is that Irons' character is not listed as Damodar as was listed elsewhere," notes our scooper who alerted us to the information. "But that doesn't necessarily mean that both can't be his name, as evil D&D mages never seem to be satisfied with just one of anything." Hey, he's got something there... [Thanks to John Wetmiller for being on-the-ball.] August 8, 1999... Dave Arneson, the co-creator of D&D, appeared at the Gencon gaming convention in Milwaukee this past weekend. Arneson just returned from the set in Prague, where we were told filming has just completed, and spoke talking his experience on the set yesterday. Anyone who attended the 'History of Roleplaying' seminar held yesterday, please write in with details about what was said! We've also been scooped additional crew names. Costume designer Barbara Lane has worked on such well-known past series as Dr. Who to the more-genre like Willow. Caroline Ross (True Lies, Terminator 2) is the film's editor. George Gibbs (who's worked on Indiana Jones and Superman films, as well as won an Academy Award for Who Framed Roger Rabbit) is handling the film's special effects. Courtney Solomon, the film's director, had been trying to bring the film version of Dungeons and Dragons to the big screen for nine years until he finally got his chance. [Scooped by an anonymous elf.] Another scoop informed us that Jeremy Irons character is really named Profion. He's the picture's arch villain while Damodar, the name scooped to us before, is Profion's sidekick in crime. Damodar is played by Bruce Payne (who was the bad guy in Passenger 57) although we're told "he has a totally different look..." ['Doggy' fetched us the scoop.] August 11, 1999... Lucky for us we got a response from our last request for a scooper attending Gencon to step forward. 'The Dungeon Master' wrote us an e-mail with a ton of facts in it about the D&D movie including some nuggets of information that whet our appetite for this film... "I attended the History of Roleplaying Games seminar at Gencon this past weekend. It provided alot of new information about the movie. "Grant Boucher, who was with Station X studios, and worked on Titanic as well as many other special effects movies gave the information about the movie. He also is an avid gamer and has written some of the supplements for the Star Wars Role Playing game. He is not officially part of the production of the movie but has been helping out, because he believes in the project and hopes it will help to bring about more fantasy movie projects. His free help is saving them a ton of money. "Dave Arneson, the Co-creator of the Dungeons and Dragons game gave the lecture on the history of role playing. He also just recently visited the set of the movie. His impression was that the movie was going to be great. "The movie is hoped to be released next August, to go along with the release of the 3rd edition of the Dungeons and Dragons Game. The movie may end up not coming out until halloween, however, depending on post production time. "They are due to finish shooting sometime this week. "A trailer may be available for the SHOWEST convention early next year. "They confirmed that Tom Baker does have a cameo role in the film. As does Dave Arneson, the co-creator of the Dungeons and Dragons game. The actor who played the butler from the Rocky Horror Picture show has a small part. They also mentioned that there would be other cameos that they couldn't mention yet. "A movie website is supposed to be online sometime in September. They hope to update it with character bios, trailers, and other goodies throughout the next year. "The budget is said to be between 30-35 million dollars, the exact figure is not known at the moment, pending post production costs. "Bruce Payne plays Damodar, the bald headed fighting bad guy who works with Profion. "Justin Whalen plays Ridley, the thief hero of the story. "Marlon Wayans plays Snails, another thief and Ridley's pal. He is the comic relief in the movie. They said that Whalen and Wayans have tremedous on screen chemistry. It was compared to Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser. "Zoe McClellon plays the mage of the group and is the love interest of Ridley. "Jeremy Irons plays Profion, the bad guy wizard in the film. "Lee Arenberg plays Elwood, a tough dwarf fighter. "Thora Birch plays the 17 year old Empress. They said that she had some great scenes with Jeremy Irons. "Kristen Wilson plays Norda, a half-elf ranger, who was described as the best tracker/ranger in the land. "There will be between 12-20 spells in the movie, and they will be based on spells from the game. "There will be between 12-20 different types of monsters, all from the role playing game. Some will be costumed actors, while others will be digitally created. "An effort has been made to remain true to the source material. The characters are of classes that fans of the game will recognize. Minor changes will be noted by gaming experts, such as in this world, Red dragons are more powerful than Gold dragons. "The film is being made with the hopes of sequels to come. There will be small clues and info given in this movie that might become more important should sequels occur. "The movie will be PG-13. Different camera angles are being shot in the battle scenes to enable the director (who is an avid D&D player), to use the most violent combat possible for a PG-13 rating. "The tone of the movie was described as serious, but with touches of humor in appropriate places. The tone of the original Star Wars was used for comparison. "They are already in the process of planning for role playing supplements based on the movie, as well as other things such as computer games, etc. "They said that the film will look as good as a film with twice the budget. This is because they hired the best people in the industry for just a few of the key positions. That way the quality would remain high, while the budget wouldn't. "They said that the scenery in the film is very beautiful. Some of the Castles, Monasteries, Churches, and other locations in the film have never been seen on film before. "They said that James Cameron was at one point interested in doing the movie, but do to studio problems he couldn't do it. "They also talked about how the director, Corey Solomon, has been trying to make this movie for 9 years. He has built his career around it, and is working very hard on it. He has had the chance to sell off the rights to low budget film studios who put out cheap films, but he has refused the money, wanting to make sure it gets done right. "The presentation left me feeling very positive about the movie. There seems to be an absolute dedication to make sure that the movie is done correctly." ['The Dungeon Master' left us with this scroll upon our doorstep.

  HIGHLANDER, ENDGAME

Highlander: Endgame

Release Date: 3rd Quarter, 2000 (which translates as sometime in July, August, or September); Dimension Films had previously slated this film for August 25th, 2000, but they've decided to release Texas Rangers then instead.

Title Note: This project was formerly to be titled Highlander: World Without End. Another (rumored) title at one time was Highlander: The Search for Connor. It's also been known as Highlander 4, but it appears the numbering has been dropped. (12/23/99) Someone at Cinescape noticed this week that Dimension Films refers to this as Highlander: A New Order on their official site, though Endgame is the title it's listed as in The Hollywood Reporter. I'm sticking with Endgame for now, but it does seem like the title could change again. (4/17/00) It's also worth noting that this movie should not be confused with the upcoming Sean Connery spy movie, End Game.

Distributor: Dimension Films

Cast: Adrian Paul (Duncan MacLeod), Christopher Lambert (Connor MacLeod), Lisa Barbuscia, Jim Byrnes, Ian Paul Cassidy, Adam "Edge" Copeland, Damon Dash, Sheila Gish, Bruce Payne, Peter Wingfield (Methos), Donnie Yen

Director: Douglas Aarniokoski (debut of the first assistant director of several movies, including The Faculty, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Living Out Loud, and From Dusk Til Dawn)

Screenwriter: Joel Soisson (cowriter of The Supernaturals, Trick or Treat; his next projects will be Mimic 2 and Dracula 2000)

Based upon: The fantasy series of movies about swashbuckling immortals also translated to the small screen as a popular TV series. Indeed, considering that several of the characters from the TV show are appearing in this film, it's possible you could almost describe this movie as an adaptation of the series. You can definitely say it combines the film and TV series.

Weapons: In an interesting twist, it's been reported by Variety that the Immortals in this film will use other weapons than just swords, though which ones he meant wasn't specified.

Premise: The details of the plot have been kept very secure, but it is known that it takes place across the world and time, with both Connor (Lambert) and Duncan (Paul) being featured, sometimes together, sometimes apart.

Filming: Production on this movie started on October 22nd, 1999, in and around Bucharest, Romania; with filming also scheduled to take place in Paris, New York, and Scotland; and wrapped the week of March 7th, 2000.

Genre: Action, Eye Candy

Unofficial Preview Page: Backstage Pass

Wrestler on Set Report: WWF (This feature has over a dozen images of "Edge" on location in Romania.)

Official Site: Highlander (That's the front page; here's two of the sub-pages (h4 and WWE) about this film. It's interesting to note that this site is still using the World Without End subtitle despite news elsewhere that the title changed a while back.)

Christopher Lambert stars in "Highlander: Endgame", Dimension FIlms, 2000

Greg's Preview Thoughts: Jumping back on the big screen, the Highlander epic appears to be continuing with the things that fans liked, which is to say, the characters of the TV series and the character of Connor as played by Christopher Lambert. The continuity of the Highlander series has always baffled me a bit, as I've not quite understood how there could be all these extra Immortals if "there can be only one", and that particular event happened quite early in the series (to avoid spoilers for those new to Highlander, I'm not saying when). From what I've seen, it seems there may be some sort of alternate reality tweaking between the TV series and the movies? (2/1/00) A fan wrote in to let me know that yes, in the 2nd season of the TV show, they effectively rewrote history so that in the show's canon, the 2nd and 3rd Highlander didn't actually happen, so this 4th film can be seen as a transition from the Lambert series to the Adrian Paul series.

Anyway, the TV series was quite popular during its 6-year syndicated run, inspiring an animated series as well, and there are conventions, fan sites, etc. devoted to it to this day, so the fanbase is definitely still there. It's also interesting to note that this movie was finally greenlighted (after a long development process) as other sword-and-sorcery movies like Dungeons and Dragons and Lord of the Rings moved into production as well. What all this seems to signify is a renewed interest (at least on the part of Hollywood) in the fantasy genre, which if these movies are the successes their respective studios hope they'll be, might mean other big-budget fantasy epics have a better chance of getting made as well. (Mage and Elfquest, for example, are both in development).

City rings with clash of swords

Shooting starts this week on the fourth in the Highlander series, which started in the 1980's with French star Christophe Lambert in the title role. Romania pipped Ireland for the location, both countries offering attractive costs, tax incentives and a high-level of skills. The film, financed by Miramax, is expected to be the most expensive ever shot in Romania with primary locations including the cavernous Casa Radio, Ceausescu's unfinished museum at Eroilor which was looted and left in ruins after 1989. "It is a perfect Highlander location, allowing us to stage dramatic swordfights and add impressive special effects - we can even make it look like we are blowing up the whole building," said producer Bill Panzer, who has been involved with the Highlander theme for 15 years. Other locations include the subterranean caverns of Romania's salt-mine, where several people will meet their maker.

Commenting on the news, Ralph Hamers, country manager of ING Barings Romania, who previously ran ING's film financing operations worldwide, said: "This is very good nes for Romania, which wants to build up its film industry. A studio like Miramax deciding to come to Romania with a sequel to a movie with a good name is an excellent opportunity. It means Romania has been recognized as having the general infrastructure and services at acceptable levels for the American movie industry."

Panzer added, "the movie will give jobs to scores of carpenters, plumbers and electricians, not to mention local actors and actresses." He will bring over a team of around 40 British and American actors and technicians, including the man responsible for the special effects in Mel Gibson's 'Braveheart', to work jointly with a Romanian crew from Castel.

Location manager for Miramax, Jim Maceo, was full of praise for the local company. "They really are a great bunch of guys and very professional," he said. At the turn of last year, the Snagov studios were the setting for an all-action fantasy film, Beowulf, again starring Lambert. Also, Tom Berenger, star of Platoon and Someone to Watch Over Me, shot a movie downtown with the Castel team.

Panzer revealed that Romania had been chosen as a location for a variety of reasons including low production costs and ease of communication because of the high standard of spoken English. "Our guys have also found the technicians here are well-educated and willing to learn new ideas from their international peers," the producer added.

Panzer calls himself 'Mr. Highlander' because he has been in charge of all three of the movies and the spin-offs. The television series starred British actor Adrian Paul as Duncan, a relative of the original Lambert character. There was also an animated version and significant profit in related merchandising, including replica swords.

Filming is due to start on Thursday. Sets have already been constructed within Casa Radio, including a full recreation of Lambert's New York loft apartment from the original film. Romania is not expected to feature largely in the final cut, because many scenes will be superimposed on US backgrounds. Some of the older parts of Bucharest will be standing in for Paris.

The storyline is a tale of revenge over a period of 350 years, with the villain played by Briton Bruce Payne, famous as Wesley Snipes' opponent in 'Passenger 57'. Lambert and Paul are expected to fight twice during the movie, the first time for fun but then later in deadly earnest.

The shooting schedule runs into December and Panzer hopes post-production, which will take place in Britain to help the movie qualify for tax breaks, can be completed within six months, aiming for general release in the autumn of 2000.

The movie Resident Evil has been already filming in California and Oregon. The movie will be directed by George Romero and the movie will be based on Chris`s mission. From what I hear,Brad sticks with the rest of the S*T*A*R*S team and his name will not be Brad,it will be Mike and he is looking for his girlfriend Rebecca. I also hear the movie will be rated "R" for strong violence and blood and gore.
